The Inspira Hospital system announced not too long ago that they were looking to move the core hospital functions of the Woodbury (Underwood) facility to a new location. After much research, they chose a location in Mullica Hill, close to the Glassboro border.
It is a great location, as it basically sits at the exit of Route 55 and 322. Considering the old Underwood and the Jefferson Kennedy Washington Township locations aren’t on major highways, this move could prove very popular for residents and emergency personnel from a wide area.
Just 9 months ago in May 2017, NJ.com posted a story of the groundbreaking ceremony. From that article:
The 204-bed, 467,000-square-foot facility is expected to open in September 2019. Skanska USA is building the 5-story hospital. The new medical center will employ 1,400 and replace Inspira’s hospital in Woodbury.
The Woodbury site will continue to house a satellite emergency department, observation beds, some outpatient services, as well as office personnel handling billing and other administrative duties.
We only have one photo at this time which was taken in the last few days, and was provided to 42Freeway. As you can see, the development has really taken off and the core shape and size of the hospital can be determined. I do see another stairwell tower on the right edge, which makes me think the building will continue further to the right?
The location also puts them a short distance from Rowan University, and across from the still young South Jersey Technology Park, Surprisingly, this popular Route 55 exit is very much underdeveloped. Big things are planned for the interchange, and 42Freeway will be doing a special report soon.
During the time people knew Inspira was looking for a new location (2016), 42Freeway broke the story of Inspira buying 30 acres of land in Deptford NJ, on Clements Bridge Road across from the old Pathmark Shopping center (technically across from TD Bank, and the other half is still owned by a company wanting to develop a movie theater). Other local media quickly picked up on the story, and Inspira officials said they do have plans for medical facilities there but it is not going to be the new Hospital. Later, the Mullica Hill location was confirmed
Much more exiting news to come regarding the Rt 322 and Rt 55 area.
